Ceramic beads

Ceramic beads are made of zirconium oxide stabilised with yttrium oxide or cerium oxide, or of zirconium silicate with the possible addition of alumina. Currently, all ceramic beads are produced by sintering, which ensures a compact structure without air bubbles and high hardness.

Chemical composition:         ZrO2 – 95 % (± 0,2 %), Y2O3 – 5,0 % (± 0,2 %)
Diameters: various in the range from 0,1 mm to 60 mm
Specific weight: approx. 6,05 g/cm³
Bulk density: approx. 3,70 kg/l
Vickers hardness: approx. 1250
Colour: pearl white with a high gloss

Characteristics:

  • the highest hardness and resistance to cracking and abrasion
  • very high specific weight and bulk density

Applications:

  • milling of very hard materials
  • contamination-free grinding
  • milling to the size of nanoparticles
  • production of high quality paints and varnishes e.g. automotive
  • grinding in basket mills (immersion mills)
  • grinding in high energy mills
  • grinding in high speed mills

Cerium stabilised zirconium oxide beads
(Ceria stabilised zirconia beads)

Chemical composition:  ZrO2 – 80 % (± 5 %), CeO2 – 20,0 (± 5 %)
Diameters: various in the range from 0,4 mm to 3,0 mm
Specific weight: approx. 6,20 g/cm³
Bulk density: approx. 3,90 kg/l
Vickers hardness: approx. 1100
Colour: glossy brow

Characteristics:

  • the highest specific weight and bulk density
  • very high hardness and resistance to cracking and abrasion
  • due to the very low abrasion, the brown colour of the beads does not stain the ground material

Applications:

  • standard grinding media for milling of pigments
  • effective production of high-quality paints
  • production of agrochemicals
  • grinding of titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate and other minerals
  • grinding of other materials with high density, viscosity and hardness in the pearl mills

Sintered zirconium silicate beads

Parameters:

Chemical composition: ZrO2 – 60,0 % (± 5 %), SiO2 – 37,5 % (± 2,5 %)

Diameters: various in the range from 0,4 mm to 2,8 mm

Specific weight: approx. 4,05 g/cm³

Bulk density: approx. 2,55 kg/l

Vickers hardness: approx. 950

Colour: white

Characteristics:

much harder, heavier and more resistant to abrasion than glass beads; they allow to achieve a much better grinding effect and speed up production

Applications:

  • grinding and dispersing of paints, varnishes and agrochemicals of medium viscosity, density and hardness in pearl mills
  • grinding of titanium dioxide, kaolin, calcium carbonate, metal ores and other minerals
  • vibration polishing of metal surfaces
